Gestational Diabetes Mellitus(GDM) happens only during pregnancy. GDM usually happens in second half of the pregnancy. Doctors check for GDM between weeks 24 - 28. During pregnancy placenta makes a hormone called Human Placental Lactogen(HPL), which can buildup extra glucose in blood. This extra glucose in mother’s blood stream crosses the placenta and triggers the baby’s pancreas to make extra insulin, and with this the baby grows too large which leads to macrosomia(extra weight). GDM women have high infant birth - weight when compared to non-GDM. According to American Pregnancy Association 2-5% of pregnant women develop Gestational Diabetes Mellitus(GDM) every year.
