Etiology of Diabetes Mellitus

Most cases(95%) of type 1 diabetes are the result of environmental factors interacting with a genetically susceptible person. The frequency of disease development in children with a mother who has type 1 diabetes is 2-3% and with a father who has type 1 diabetes is 5-6%. Human Leukocyte Antigen(HLA) class II molecules are strongly associated with type 1 diabetes. Monozygotic twins have 60% chance to develop the disease within 10 years after the first twin is diagnosed. Dizygotic twins have only 8% chance which is similar among siblings.
