Biomarkers for Diabetes Mellitus

Biomarkers also called ‘molecular markers’ or ‘signature molecules’ are the biological molecules found in blood, tissues and other body fluids and are used to check how well the body is responding to a particular disease. These are the “direct markers” or “indirect markers” of the extent of a disease. Hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) is considered as a biomarker for the presence of Hyperglycemia(Diabetes Mellitus). Usage of biomarkers in the growth of anti-diabetic drugs will depend on understanding of the pathogenesis of diabetes.
